Rodent Damage.
Well, something was bound to happen eventually! We've had a few warrantable repairs that needed work (always expected), and took the RV up to our dealership before Christmas to get them done. We had a good long 5-ish week break between cleaning it out, winterizing, and our next scheduled weekend in January (plus the holidays in the middle), so it was the perfect time to drop it off and have them repair the ceiling, fix the furnace, and grease what needed to be greased.
The dealership did a great job, and we picked up the camper the first week of January. Our kickoff trip to 2020 was scheduled to be in St Augustine on the beach during MLK weekend, so the timing was perfect.
A week after we brought the camper home I opened it up to start assessing what we needed to put back in there, and start packing. I saw some curious looking black foam pieces on the floor, and some pieces of wire casing as well. I just figured they had forgotten to vacuum up some of the area where they worked.
Nope.
The next night I went out there, and the InCommand system would not connect to bring the slide in or turn on the lights. I flipped our breaker; I restarted the system both soft and hard start; I disconnected and reconnected the battery; I even unplugged and plugged back in our 30 amp cord. Jeff promised he would go look at it in the morning, and call the dealership to give them a piece of our mind because ahem, why wasn't it working …
Well, when he called the next morning they asked him to send pictures and describe what he saw. He opened up the AC filter cover in the ceiling and saw this mess!
Jimmy the technician identified immediately that it was probably some kind of rodent damage. And that we should call her insurance company and see if repairs were covered.
Jeff hauled it up to Marietta (over an hour with traffic) where they said they would assess the damages quickly as possible and get back to us before they started.
Meanwhile, we called our insurance agent to verify our coverage and deductible, which was $250 …
Total bill for that stinker varmint? $2100.
He chewed from the outside in, which meant he chewed through the exterior of our AC unit and then tried to make himself a little nest on the AC filter cover … ugh ugh ugh gross I hate rodents so much ugh yuck I'm traumatized …
Luckily (?) they didn't see any more damage or evidence they had made a permanent home for very long in the camper. And, because we were going to be gone so long aka 5 weeks I had removed absolutely everything out of the camper, even shampoo and cleaning supplies so I just can't believe they were even attracted inside but whatever.
Needless to say, we had to cancel our weekend in St Augustine at Bryn Mawr and lose our deposit. We'll get back someday but I don't know when. In the meantime, we pick it up this week and we'll try kicking off our season again this coming weekend!
